What are the Bangkok spots a first-time visitor can’t miss?
Phra Nakhon district is the center of Bangkok culture. It's the home of the Grand Palace as well as several museums and temples. This area is full of tourists. If your time is limited, I highly recommend the Ancient City. It's a far off the center of Bangkok but you get to see several places around Thailand in one spot.
Do’s and don’ts in Bangkok: (Ex: Tipping: yes/ no, public transport tips, safety tips etc.):
Tipping is not expected but most services will overcharge you anyway if you can't speak Thai. Use public transportation (rail train) if you want to avoid traffic and save time. Rail trains (MRT and BTS) are very straightforward to navigate. For buses, you can use Google Maps to check for bus stops and bus numbers. If you want to be a badass, use Uber. Uber is better than taxi's because the fare is calculated by the system rather than the driver. Do not trust strangers who approach you. Most of them are selling overpriced stuff. Always ask for the price first before eating/taking anything.
What do you do and why do you do it?
I am a front-end developer because I like to make complicated ideas easy to understand. Hobbies include travel and learning about money.
How much do you spend on an average night out on the town?
No more than 1000 baht (about 32 USD).
Which Bangkok shops do you hit up when you’re itching for something new?
I don't shop in Bangkok. Clothing and electronics here are expensive compared to the west. I just buy things I need from the local department stores.
Your all-time favorite musicians:
Beethoven, Frank Sinatra, Tom Jobim, All American Rejects, Jordan Page.
Which neighborhood is it best to experience during the day / night?
Phra Nakhon and Prathum Wan districts are good for both day and night. Bangkok is alive 24 hours. During the day, visit temples and museums. At night, it's shopping and food.
What’s the area in town you’ll never be caught dead in?
Probably Phra Nakhon. Because if you're dead, there is a medical museum nearby.
What’s the one place in Bangkok you think is underrated?
Ancient City. It's far from Bangkok but I think it's the best way to spend time here.
Where would you take a date for a romantic night out?
Baiyoke Tower II or Mandarin Oriental restaurant.
Drunk and hungry - where do you go in Bangkok?
Khao San Road.
It's freeeeezing out - what should a visitor do?
Haha! You're dreaming if you're freezing in Bangkok.
Where do you take your guest when you want to impress?
The Grand Palace.
Special views that mainstream tourists don't know about:
The Ancient City.
Best place for a cheap bite on-the-go:
7-11. Seriously, their foods are not that bad. They even microwave it for you.
You’re meeting the mayor of Bangkok - what constructive criticism would you give them?
We need drones that carry people to places because our road traffic is sometimes slower than walking.
