a bit about Monika

What do you do and why do you do it?

I'm a musician! I teach kids the piano, I'm doing my masters in composing music and I write music in my spare time. As long as I'm doing something music related and I'm being creative and active. I'm happy.

What’s the worst job you’ve ever had and why was it so effing bad?

I got fired out of the blue from a cafe a couple of years ago. At the time, it felt like the worst thing that had ever happened to me. Apparently, they had a habit of hiring people and firing them a month or so after. Safe to say I don't go there anymore!

Were you born and raised in Brighton? If not, where did you grow up and what brought you to Brighton?

I was actually born in the U.S, and moved to England when I was 17. The first time I came to Brighton, I just completely fell in love. I thought, "I have to live here."

What’s your current hood in Brighton and what’s the best/worst thing about it?

I live in 7 Dials, which is great because it's nice and quiet, but still really close to town. But the hills....oh god the hills. I cycle everywhere so Brighton's steep hills are my nemesis.

What kind of music do you listen to and what kind of music do you absolutely HATE?

I love all music! As long as it has something to say and it's got some emotion, I love it. The only music I really dislike is a lot of current overproduced Top 40 just sounds fake.

You’re broken hearted - what tracks does your heartbreak playlist consist of?

Anything by Joni Mitchell.

Name the best TV shows of all time, and what makes them so good?

Oh god, there's so many to choose from. I love comedies, like It's Always Sunny, Peep Show , Spaced or The Mighty Boosh.

Name some spots in Brighton that are good for a Tinder date.

Well I've been in a relationship since before Tinder was even a thing, so I'm not sure! I like Duke's at Komedia, they've got those comfy velvet sofas that are great for cuddling during a film.

Which public figure would you want to see “roasted”? (every public figure is fair game).

Hmm...maybe Tommy Wiseau? It would be interesting to see how he would handle a roast.

Who’s your hero and where in Brighton would you take them out for a serious hang?

I'd love to have a few drinks with David Fincher and just talk about movies for as long as he could physically take it.

Where do you buy those fabulous clothes of yours?

Mostly online, but in Brighton I like Beyond Retro, All About Aud, and Black Pearl.

What’s the area/ spot in town you’ll never be caught dead in?

Churchill Square during half term. Or the i360.

What’s the thing you LOVE to do in your city that you never get to do?

I love spending time on the beach, but since it's England and all, it's only really warm around 2 months of the year. The rest of the time it's cold, cloudy and INCREDIBLY windy.

Where do you go in Brighton for a casual night out?

Usually The Western, for a couple of pints with my friends.

Where would you go in Brighton to celebrate some freaking good news?

Anywhere with beer and good music! The Western, Lion and Lobster, The Hope and Ruin, The Windmill....I could go on.

What’s your choice of transportation in Brighton and why?

I cycle pretty much everywhere. The steep hills are hell on earth, but other than that it's great. There's a lot of good cycle paths in Brighton, and on a sunny day it's absolutely lovely.

What are the Brighton spots a first-time visitor can’t miss?

The Laines, The Pavillion, and countless great pubs, clubs and venues.

What are the Brighton spots tourists should run from screaming?

I don't know why, but tourists love Primark. It's not worth it, trust me. Just stay away from Western Road in general.

Tomorrow’s your last day in Brighton. How do you spend it?

Go to Nowhere Man for pancakes, then for a long bike ride along the seafront.

What’s your favorite vacation city in the world and why?

Barcelona, maybe? Or anywhere in Croatia. Anywhere warm and by the beach!
