What are the Dallas spots a first-time visitor can’t miss?
i'd say a first-timer should absolutely lean into the Texas spirit with mariachi bands + nachos at El Ranchero + salsa dancing at Cafe Salsera. learn the 2-step at Round Up Saloon (Dallas' favorite gay-country-line-dancing-bar) or ride a mechanical bull at Gilley's. and, of course, if you are here in October no one should ever miss the Texas State Fair.
Do’s and don’ts in Dallas: (Ex: Tipping: yes/ no, public transport tips, safety tips etc.):
do go for the outdoor seating if there's a misting fan. Don't go for the big "texas hair".
What do you do and why do you do it?
art, because I was looking for the most efficient way to waste my college tuition
How much do you spend on an average night out on the town?
Which Dallas shops do you hit up when you’re itching for something new?
Dolly Python is a great second hand store where i get fur coats for the winter + Southside Lofts has some local artist stalls inside its walls (plus a good coffee shop) or Commerce Goods + Supply downtown has great little eclectic finds.
Your all-time favorite musicians:
alt-j + tom waits + the buena vista social club + tina turner
Which neighborhood is it best to experience during the day / night?
texas takes its food + drink seriously, so no matter where or when you are you will find a bar or restaurant open + ready to wet your whistle. That said - i prefer lower greenville + oak lawn at night.
What’s the area in town you’ll never be caught dead in?
not gonna lie. As someone who tries to avoid watching televised sports, waiting in long lines and, in the extreme general, any persons who might order a "vodka-cranberry" or wear graphic tees effusing their love for "rose all day" or declaring that they may or may not be a mermaid - uptown holds little interest for me.
What’s the one place in Dallas you think is underrated?
downtown...or maybe the cedars
Where would you take a date for a romantic night out?
movie on the lawn at the nasher sculpture center
Drunk and hungry - where do you go in Dallas?
buzz brews - open 24 hrs, good beer on tap, blueberry pancakes + potato marbles (don't ask, just order)
It's freeeeezing out - what should a visitor do?
find an apartment with a great rooftop hot tub to sneak into
Where do you take your guest when you want to impress?
the champagne room on the top floor of Forty Five Ten downtown
Your go-to brunch spots:
oddfellows in oak cliff.
Your perfect night out in Dallas includes:
old blue jeans
Which local creators do you admire?
look into Rise + Talk. its a series of talks with local creatives. very interesting.
Best place for a cheap bite on-the-go:
the tacos from the Fuel City gas station
You’re meeting the mayor of Dallas - what constructive criticism would you give them?
more dedicated bike lanes + sidewalks.
