a bit about Felix
What do you do and why do you do it?
I run a venue, Styx, and events company, Rift. I love seeing people come together to share an experience that they love! I've created experiences in shops, hospitals, libraries and towerblocks; overnight, every month for hundreds of people or just for one.
What’s the worst job you’ve ever had and why was it so effing bad?
I'm lucky that I've always found positives in the jobs I've had from punching numbers to shifting stuff but I do remember having my arm halfway down a toilet once and thinking it didn't get much worse...
Were you born and raised in London? If not, where did you grow up and what brought you to London?
Absolutely. I was born in Central London and grew up in an area called Finsbury Park. I've seen it change through the decades as much as I have.
What’s your current hood in London and what’s the best/worst thing about it?
I live in Clapton in Hackney East London and have for seven years or so. It's a phenomenal area as my house overlooks the River Lea so I can spend my weekends kayaking, biking and walking but still grab a flat white or a pub lunch.
What kind of music do you listen to and what kind of music do you absolutely HATE?
Depends on my mood; tend to listen to meaningless electronic music when I'm working, last two gigs I went to were both Skepta (at Ally Pally and in Seattle).
You’re broken hearted - what tracks does your heartbreak playlist consist of?
Ha! I remember leaving my family when I got to University and was on my own for the first time and belting out The Smiths' 'There is a Light that will Never Go Out'...
Name the best TV shows of all time, and what makes them so good?
THE WIRE // BREAKING BAD // GAME OF THRONES // are all amazing becuase of brilliant writing, perfect observations and unbelievable depth.
Name some spots in London that are good for a Tinder date.
Never been on a tinder date, but there are some incredible cocktail bars across East London usually hidden behind telephone boxes or inside sports bars. I'd recommend Satan's Whiskers in Bethnal Green if I had to choose.
Where do you buy those fabulous clothes of yours?
I think I realised I had reached middle age when I suddenly got into outdoor wear. All the better for climbing mountains and cycling down dirt tracks.
What’s the area/ spot in town you’ll never be caught dead in?
Clapham. Nuff said.
What’s the thing you LOVE to do in your city that you never get to do?
Sit under a tree in Hampstead Heath and read a book.
Where do you go in London for a casual night out?
The local. Everytime.
Where would you go in London to celebrate some freaking good news?
Vietnamese on Kingsland Road. Bring your own booze and great atmosphere for a celebration.
What’s your choice of transportation in London and why?
Bike = fast, easy, cheap, shows you London that you can't see any other way. Be careful out there though!
What are the London spots a first-time visitor can’t miss?
Don't go the touristy route. Get off the map. Explore communities and neighbourhoods!
What are the London spots tourists should run from screaming?
The London Eye. The Planetarium. Madame Tussauds. The Aquarium. The Zoo. Not good. Very not good.
Tomorrow’s your last day in London. How do you spend it?
What’s your favorite vacation city in the world and why?
Venice: sea, art, history, food. Nothing even compares.
