a bit about Helene
What do you do and why do you do it?
By day, I am a salesperson at a technology company. By night, I am a lifestyle blogger. I write about food, travel and fitness, because I want to inspire people to be a better version of themselves their own way. And I also love eating, exploring new places and cultures, and keeping fit and healthy!
You’re broken hearted - what tracks does your heartbreak playlist consist of?
When I'm down, I love listening to Ed Sheeran. He has the perfect mix of slow ballads and uplifting pop tracks.
What are the best TV shows of all time?
I love crime shows. Since I studied forensic science, I like comparing the shows to real life. My favourites include Dexter, Criminal Minds, Bones, and Castle. Other than that, I love Game of Thrones, and superhero shows like The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. (yes, I watch a lot of TV)
Name some spots in Madrid that are good for a Tinder date.
Mercado San Ildefonso, Retiro park, Cines Princesa, Churreria San Gines
Who’s your hero and where in Madrid would you take them out for a serious hang?
Chris Pratt, since he seems like a fun guy to hang out with. I'd take him to see a wrestling match at Tabacalera and then for some delicious tapas.
Where do you buy those fabulous clothes of yours?
In Calle Serrano, where everything is way too expensive but so irresistible.
What’s the area/ spot in town you’ll never be caught dead in?
Couldn't say, I love all the areas of Madrid I've seen so far.
What’s the thing you LOVE to do in your city that you never get to do?
Chilling or going for a run in Retiro park.
What’s the most decadent / extreme dish you ever ate in Madrid and where did you get it?
I love the grilled octopus at Alcaravea. It's grilled to perfection, smoky but tender, with a side of mashed potato. Heavenly!
Is there a hidden bar / hole in the wall in Madrid that you particularly like?
Haven't found one yet, but I'll keep you guys updated!
What’s the most expensive restaurant / spa / hotel you’ve ever been to in Madrid? How much did it cost and what did you get there?
Alcaravea is the most expensive place I've been to. My family and I got octopus, beef cheek stew, grilled artichoke, and tuna tataki, and it cost around 25 euros per person.
What restaurant in Madrid looks crap, but the food’s amazing?
La Fragua de Vulcano is a gem hidden in the middle of the touristy area. The food is amazing and great value for money!
Where can you get the best cocktail in Madrid? Which one do you like?
I got an amazing strawberry G&T at Casa Mono (probably doesn't count as a cocktail...)
Where would you take your partner in Madrid if you wanted to really pamper them?
I'd probably take them to Alcaravea.
Which snacks can you only get in your country, and which ones do you recommend?
There's nothing like some good old Jamon Iberico!
What’s the one place you think is overrated in Madrid?
Mercado San Miguel is nice, but overrun by tourists and overpriced.
What’s the one place you think is underrated in Madrid?
La Fragua de Vulcano looks very tacky, but it's one of my favourite places to bring visitors to for good authentic food.
What are the Madrid spots a first-time visitor can’t miss?
Sol, Plaza Mayor, Retiro, La Latina, Chueca, Palacio Real
Tomorrow’s your last day in Madrid. How do you spend it?
Eating all the awesome food, for sure!
What’s your favorite vacation city in the world and why?
New York, because there is so much to explore.
