a bit about María
What do you do and why do you do it?
I’m a graphic design student and I do it because it’s the only way my mind works and the easiest way to understand the world and speak what’s on my mind. Also because I find it really fun!
What’s the worst job you’ve ever had and why was it so effing bad?
Designing book covers for my father! Working with family is the worst idea.
Were you born and raised in Mexico City?
Yes I was!
What’s your current hood in Mexico City and what’s the best/worst thing about it?
La Condesa. It’s always full of people from all over the city and all over the world. It’s full of puppies too! People love to walk their dogs and go for a run in the park. Many restaurants and cafés, also bookshops. The worst thing is that art decó architecture is being knocked down for the new buildings.
What kind of music do you listen to and what kind of music do you absolutely HATE?
I listen to rap music, reggaeton, pop, and jazz. I hate metal.
You’re broken hearted – what tracks does your heartbreak playlist consist of?
Como la flor by Selena (not Gómez though haha) Broken heart by Spirtualized, No más llorar by Natalia Lafourcade and Me cuesta olvidarte by Mecano.
Name the best TV shows of all time, and what makes them so good?
I love TV shows that I can actually relate to. So I love Girls, Please Like Me, and Master of None. Even when the characters live in other cities, the kind of stupid stuff they do, is the kind of stupid stuff I do.
Name some spots in Mexico City that are good for a Tinder date.
Cineteca nacional, any café in La Roma, on the top of Torre Latinoamericana, a beer in a “cantina” in the city centre.
Which public figure would you want to see “roasted”?
Javier Duarte (politician) or @callodehacha (tweetstar).
Who’s your hero and where in Mexico City would you take them out for a serious hang?
Catalina Ruiz-Navarro (feminist journalist), I would take her to have a mango ice cream in Roxy.
Where do you buy those fabulous clothes of yours?
I like Glitter Bazar, a bazar with different young designers. Also in friend’s garage sales and in 180º shop.
What’s the area/ spot in town you’ll never be caught dead in?
Interlomas or Santa Fe.
What’s the thing you LOVE to do in your city that you never get to do?
Go to my favorite coffee shop of the moment and read a book or just draw. There’s always so much to do and craziness everywhere!
Where do you go in Mexico City for a casual night out?
El Bósforo or pizza and beer at Cancino. I like Sanborns bar too even though its a weird-sad place.
Where would you go in Mexico City to celebrate some freaking good news?
Nagaoka, my favorite Japanese place since childhood.
What’s your choice of transportation in Mexico City and why?
Subway. It can take you everywhere and it’s very cheap.
What are the Mexico City spots a first-time visitor can’t miss?
Zócalo de la ciudad, trajineras de Xochimilco, Casa Estudio Luis Barragán, Mercado de Coyoacán, MUAC.
Tomorrow’s your last day in Mexico City. How do you spend it?
I would go to the centre, to Zócalo, walk around the streets and draw the people, have plenty of beer and tacos. Read a book and drink coffee in La Condesa.
What’s your favorite vacation city in the world and why?
I’ve been in Jerusalem and it is my favorite place on earth, it’s like a museum but in real life. It’s really far so sometimes I just feel like going to a beach in Oaxaca, swim, have a great time with friends and feel like life is really easy.
