a bit about Kylea

What do you do and why do you do it?

I'm a UX Designer working on making simple and meaningful products that are easy to use. I do it because I love creating experiences that make peoples lives easier. I also spend a lot of time drawing and practicing calligraphy.

What’s the worst job you’ve ever had and why was it so effing bad?

Probably when I worked as a server in a prawn (shrimp) restaurant in high school. It was a big touristy place and nobody enjoyed working there. I also hated prawns.

Were you born and raised in Montreal? If not, where did you grow up and what brought you to Montreal?

I was born and raised in New Zealand and after feeling like there was so much more to see out there in the world I decided to sell all my belongings and move half way around the world. Canada was my first choice as I heard the people were super friendly and the nature was beautiful (both are true).

What’s your current hood in Montreal and what’s the best/worst thing about it?

My current hood is the Mile End and I absolutely love it here. The cafes and restaurants are fantastic, there are lots of cute little boutiques, many streets to explore, as well as beautiful parks to hang out in.

What kind of music do you listen to and what kind of music do you absolutely HATE?

I listen to a lot of different music from pop to indie rock. I really like Portugal the man, alt-j, Lorde 😛, Arcade fire, Rodriguez etc. I really hate heavy metal!

You’re broken hearted - what tracks does your heartbreak playlist consist of?

Probably a lot of Ed Sheeran 😂

Name the best TV shows of all time, and what makes them so good?

The more heavy shows I love are Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Breaking Bad, Narcos, Stranger Things, Black Mirror. More lighthearted shows would be The Office, Silicon Valley, Arrested Development.

Where do you buy those fabulous clothes of yours?

I haven't been here long enough to scope out to much on the shopping front, but there are a lot of smaller boutiques in the area that will be checking out very soon.

What’s the thing you LOVE to do in your city that you never get to do?

Cafe hopping, I love hanging out at different cafes but I'm often to busy at work to do this.

Where do you go in Montreal for a casual night out?

Most likely just a nice cafe or restaurant in the area. If its summer I like walking around at night and seeing what's happening - often there will be outdoor festivals downtown.

What’s your choice of transportation in Montreal and why?

In the winter I would stick to the metro to stay away from the cold! In the summer I will be cruising around on BIXI bikes because biking is my favourite way to get around.

What are the Montreal spots a first-time visitor can’t miss?

I love the Murals around Montreal and there is a handy map you can use to find them: I also really love the light show AURA at the Notre-Dame Basilica

What are the Montreal spots tourists should run from screaming?

Old port is really beautiful but when it comes to food and shopping it's incredibly overpriced.

What’s your favorite vacation city in the world and why?

I love Wellington in New Zealand - it's a small city on the ocean with a really good art and music scene. You can get the best coffee in the world, spend hours walking around the neighbourhoods, up and down hills, and hang out at the beach :)
