a bit about Dana

Are you a planned or a spontaneous shopper? What’s your go-to store in New York?

A little bit of both, I guess. Love to thrift in my hood, at Friends, mostly.

What’s the one place in New York that you’re sure only you truly appreciate?

Under the whale at The Museum of Natural History, or the boiler room at MoMA PS1 (so underrated).

Where do you go in New York if you have two hours to kill?

Washington Square Park, if I’m in Manhattan. Maria Hernandez in BK.

What’s the thing you LOVE to do in New York but never actually do?

Who’s your hero and where would you take them out for a bite or a drink in New York?

Wow. Um… I want to say I’d party with Robert Mapplethorpe, but that would be a total lie bc truthfully I’d grab coffee with my mom.

If you were given a choice, mayor of which neighborhood in New York would you be?

That’s a hard one – on the one hand, Bushwick is without a doubt my favorite neighborhood and home, but to be mayor would be the peak of gentrification, and not something I feel comfortable with. Could I be co-mayor with an original Bushwickian? Is that an option?

What’s the place in New York you’ll never be caught dead in?

The slaughterhouse by my train station. Maybe dead, though, lol.

Where do you and your drinking buddies meet for a casual night out in New York?

Either the bar I used to work at or Pearl’s in Bushwick.

Where would you go in New York to celebrate the best news EVER!?

Prob Union Pool where I can make a fool of myself bc everyone there at this point is a tourist making a fool of themselves. Hot tourists, though.

What would make a perfect day in the sun for you?

Take pictures around the city, maybe grab a train to the beach at Rockaways, fall asleep somewhere surprising, sip some beer, read, act like a dumb idiot who likes the sun too much, be a goof and listen to The Kinks or maybe “My Sweet Lord” bc yolo and winter’s coming.

If it’s been raining outside for days and you’re sick of staying at home – where would you go?

Firstly, no way I’d be at home. Can’t stay in. Doesn’t happen. Secondly, it would have to be indoors, I guess. So I’d probably jump between places off of the Bedford L stop – buy records at Rough Trade, drink coffee at Konditori and then at MatchaBar, check out the new (old) clothes at Beacon’s Closet, and listen to my winter playlist.

It’s your last day in New York – how do you spend your time?

I actually have a list like that, just in case. I’d go to my favorite spots and the sentimental ones. Wake up, drink coffee at Trans-Pecos, go to my gym, ride to Williamsburg, walk the bridge, buy a bag or shoes at Edith Machinist (because fuck it, why not spend money I don’t have – last day and everything), grab lunch either at Soho Thai or Sweetgreen, go to MoMA and Museum of Natural History (to sadly say goodbye), and then barhop: 169 Bar, The Johnsons, Pearl’s, Barcade, Union Pool, Pete’s Candy Store, George and Jacks, Mugs Alehouse (where I used to work!), and anything else I can cram in before passing out. Possibly karaoke.

It’s a Saturday night and the mood is right – where do you go in New York to party?

Williamsburg/Greenpoint to barhop and cap it w/ George and Jack’s amazing af jukebox.

What’s the thing you love doing that isn’t work, relationship or family related?

Being in the darkroom for fun (like, when it’s not work). Also traveling fo sho.

What’s the one place a first-time visitor in New York can’t miss?

I mean, I hate Times Square so fucking much, but you have to see it once. Other than that – Chinatown. I know it’s touristy, but fuck all y’all.
