a bit about Emanuel
What do you do and why do you do it?
I'm a photographer and I do it to capture beautiful moments and tell stories that are worth telling. It's such a thrill to capture images that can contain so much beauty, emotion, truth and so much more that can leave people in a changed state. It also gives me an excuse to travel and meet people I otherwise would have no reason to.
What’s the worst job you’ve ever had and why was it so effing bad?
Frying chicken? It was hot and greasy in that kitchen and my clothes would smell like fried chicken for days. Not all bad though, I got free chicken.
Were you born and raised in New York? If not, where did you grow up and what brought you to New York?
I was born in Saipan (a U.S. territory), moved to Singapore at age 4, moved to Cambodia at age 8 and back to Singapore at age 12. I went to school there through high school and moved to New York for college.
What’s your current hood in New York and what’s the best/worst thing about it?
Brooklyn Heights. It's so beautiful - like the quintessential Brooklyn of the 70s that you see in movies. Worst thing - there's no Trader Joe's nearby :(
What kind of music do you listen to and what kind of music do you absolutely HATE?
Lots of indie folk and rock. I don't hate any specific genre of music, just any song that has stupid lyrics that don't make any sense.
You’re broken hearted - what tracks does your heartbreak playlist consist of?
I can't make you love me - Bonnie Raitt. I miss you - Blink 182.
Name the best TV shows of all time, and what makes them so good?
The Office - that cast just had chemistry that couldn't be topped. Arrested Development - Every character on that show is so weird and funny. Mad Men - So evocative.
Name some spots in New York that are good for a Tinder date.
I'm not on Tinder though. But: Washington Square Park, Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Noguchi Museum in Astoria, Staten Island Ferry
Which public figure would you want to see “roasted”? (every public figure is fair game).
Donald Trump. Duh.
Who’s your hero and where in New York would you take them out for a serious hang?
I don't have a hero....
Where do you buy those fabulous clothes of yours?
J Crew, Club Monaco, Uniqlo, Nike
What’s the area/ spot in town you’ll never be caught dead in?
What’s the thing you LOVE to do in your city that you never get to do?
Go to free shows like Shakespeare in the Park
Where do you go in New York for a casual night out?
Anywhere is Greenpoint or the Lower East Side
Where would you go in New York to celebrate some freaking good news?
Shake Shack. I don't know. Han Dynasty.
What’s your choice of transportation in New York and why?
Subway... it takes you where you need to be even if it breaks every other day.
What are the New York spots a first-time visitor can’t miss?
Top of the Rock is pretty memorable. Brooklyn Bridge is a classic. Washington Square Park on a beautiful spring/summer day is magical. Chelsea Market + The Highline is a great combo.
What are the New York spots tourists should run from screaming?
Times Square. Those costumed people freak me out.
Tomorrow’s your last day in New York. How do you spend it?
Breakfast at Clinton Street Bakery & Murray's Bagels. Lunch at Mok Bar, Han Dynasty and Saigon Shack. Hang out in Washington Square Park. Dinner at Totto Ramen and then drinks at Bar Goto. After that head to the numerous bars in Greenpoint.
What’s your favorite vacation city in the world and why?
Tokyo is pretty much the best. Great people, orderly systems, amazing food, thoughtful design, efficient transportation, everything.
