a bit about Jannah
What do you do and why do you do it?
Freelance Fashion PR/Events by day & Classical Pilates instructor/Dancer by night. I work in events because I enjoy meticulously planning, organizing, setting up and witnessing an event go from idea to reality. I teach Pilates because I love helping people find strength and discipline in the bodies we so often neglect. I dance because it's how I breathe (not even being dramatic...I swear my asthma went away when I started dancing).
What’s the worst job you’ve ever had and why was it so effing bad?
I had a summer job writing copy for a guidebook for children's field trips. I sat in a windowless office facing a blank wall for eight hours writing BS about parks and science museums. Nobody in the office spoke to each other. I came up with at least 18 ways to end it all.
Were you born and raised in New York? If not, where did you grow up and what brought you to New York?
I was born in NYC, grew up in Bridgehampton and moved back here ten years ago.
What’s your current hood in New York and what’s the best/worst thing about it?
South Street Seaport. It has cobblestones and original architecture that makes you feel like you are in New York 100 years ago. It also has EVERY subway line. The worst thing is that there is no good Indian or Thai food delivery through Seamless to that area.
What kind of music do you listen to and what kind of music do you absolutely HATE?
I love hip hop and I HATE when you are in a club and they remix Beyonce. You can't remix a queen.
You’re broken hearted - what tracks does your heartbreak playlist consist of?
The Spring Awakening Soundtrack
Name the best TV shows of all time, and what makes them so good?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Veronica Mars, Breaking Bad & The Office. Buffy and Veronica because they are funny, strong, kickass teens with interests beyond their boyfriends. The Office is the perfect quirky comedy, with real awkwardness, heartbreak and the greatest love story ever told (Jim & Pam). Breaking Bad because, um, it's Breaking Bad.
Name some spots in New York that are good for a Tinder date.
Ace Bar, Chelsea Market + Highline picnic, anywhere in the east village so you can keep the adventure going or run away to a friend's house
Which public figure would you want to see “roasted”? (every public figure is fair game).
Who’s your hero and where in New York would you take them out for a serious hang?
Parris Goebel (choreographer/dancer). We would go to Miss Lilly's in Soho for brunch and do some dancehall on the bar with the waitresses. Then we would go upstairs to Tenoverten and get mani pedis with some fabulous coordinating nail art.
Where do you buy those fabulous clothes of yours?
Asos. Everything I own is ordered online from Asos or from traveling...and Aritzia.
What’s the area/ spot in town you’ll never be caught dead in?
Times Square & Murray Hill (except to extract some friends)
What’s the thing you LOVE to do in your city that you never get to do?
Read a hardcover book in Central Park (I can manage an e-book in a community garden, but never make it to the big park with a big book)
Where do you go in New York for a casual night out?
Dinner in the East Village followed by a bar on Avenue A or B
Where would you go in New York to celebrate some freaking good news?
Liquor store to buy a bottle of wine and a friend's rooftop
What’s your choice of transportation in New York and why?
Citibike. I can get from the Upper West Side to Tribeca in 30 minutes on a bike. Nothing is more direct, not even a taxi (red lights? Pshhhh bike path is golden)
What are the New York spots a first-time visitor can’t miss?
Central Park, Chelsea Market, The Highline, The Brooklyn Bridge
What are the New York spots tourists should run from screaming?
Tomorrow’s your last day in New York. How do you spend it?
Going everywhere on my map, wearing very loose hammer pants and eating everything on the list.
What’s your favorite vacation city in the world and why?
Tel Aviv. It is full of a unique creative energy that you can only understand if you have been there. Also it's a city on a beach. Need I say more?
