a bit about Mark & Daniel
What do you do and why do you do it?
Dan: As a body wash and skin care product developer, I get to create products that people will fall in love with. Whether using an interesting fragrance or a new technology, the best part of my job is making products that surprise people by providing something truly unique. Mark: Being able to create unique places through the leasing and development of retail, entertainment and restaurant concepts is very exciting. It enables me to discover new retailers from around the globe. I truly take great pride in making a positive impact on so many neighborhoods, many of which are right here in NYC.
What TV show is a must watch?
Dan: House of Cards - I love a good power couple. Mark: Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown - It's fascinating how food can shape culture and travel. I think Anthony Bourdain does a really great job at exploring political and social issues and stories through food and drink.
What’s the best karaoke song of all times?
Dan: Alcohol by Brad Paisley - It's a funny (and sometimes too truthful) song that makes everyone chuckle. Extra points to sing it with a beer in your hand. Mark: Mr. Brightside by The Killers - I think everyone knows this song and it's not a cheesy cliche sing a long.
Which movie have you watched more than 3 times?
Dan: Love Actually - It's not Christmas without watching it at least once. Mark: Casino Royale - Daniel Craig is bad ass.
Have you ever cried while reading a book? Which one?
Dan: If you've read The Fault in Our Stars by John Greene and haven't cried, you're heartless. Mark: Yes, I just recently finished Bruce Springsteen's autobiography, Born to Run, and he has a very touching way with words when describing his lost friends and passion for his work.
Are you a planned or a spontaneous shopper? What’s your go-to store in New-York City?
Dan: I'm a planned, spontaneous shopper. I plan on getting a particular item (like a t-shirt, jacket) but then I peruse a bunch of stores to see my options. However, most times I end up with something from All Saints. Mark: Definitely a planned shopper. I typically eye things up ahead of time. My favorite store is Vince. I really like the modern and clean look.
What’s the one place in New-York that you’re sure only you truly appreciate?
Dan: Whenever I run across the Williamsburg Bridge, I'm always smiling. It's grungy and gritty at the same time as it has this majestic view of Manhattan. Mark: I really enjoy all of the new running and bike paths the city has been adding to the waterfronts in both Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge Park. It provides a respite from the city streets while allowing me to get in some of the craved outdoors one can easily begin to miss in the city.
What’s your dream job?
Dan: Restauranteur- I would love to open a ton of cool, trendy restaurants across a city. Mark: Travel Writer - Getting paid and set up to travel the globe seems like a good gig.
What’s your favorite vacation city in the world and why?
Dan: It depends on if you're saying travel city or vacation city. To travel, it's definitely Amsterdam. I think it's gorgeous and enchanting to walk around the canals and they have amazing food. If it's vacation, nothing beats beach reading by day and bar hopping by night in Miami. Mark: I love traveling to London. It's the perfect blend of New York City and Europe. For vacation, St. John U.S.V.I. tops my list. It's a great place to relax on the beach, but you can stay active through hiking, snorkeling and island hopping as well.
Where do you go in New-York City if you have two hours to kill?
Dan and Mark: The Standard Biergarten. We've killed way more than two hours there over the years. Yet, whenever we have some time to kill, we find ourselves buying a stein of beer and people watching until we have our next obligation.
What’s the thing you LOVE to do in New-York City but never actually do?
Dan: Stand in Times Square and take it all in. You feel like you're at the center of something epic. Mark: Take time to be a tourist! Everyone has to enjoy the hometown offerings every now and then by checking out a new museum exhibit or taking a stroll through Times Square.
Who’s your hero and where would you take them out for a bite or a drink in New-York City?
Mark: Bono - Everyone who knows me knows about my musical obsession with U2! That said, I think there is something to be said about a rock star billionaire who has a passion to make a socio-economic impact on the world. We would of course eat at The Spotted Pig, where Bono is counted as one of several illuminati investors in the restaurant. Dan: Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks - He has so much passion for brands, marketing, and people that it's hard not to admire him. Since he's good friends with U2, we would join Mark and Bono's dinner and make it a double date.
If you were given a choice, mayor of which neighborhood in New-York City would you be?
Dan and Mark: Williamsburg - It's where we live and one of the coolest neighborhoods in the city.
What’s the place in New-York City you’ll never be caught dead in?
Dan and Mark: Port Authority Bus Terminal. It's so congested, dirty and so worn- we avoid it like the plague.
Where do you and your drinking buddies meet for a casual night out in New-York City?
Dan and Mark: Mad Hatter is this English Pub that we started going to when we lived just a few blocks away. They always have good sports on and a very popular backyard garden. Now it's been 8 years and whenever our friends are getting together for a casual night, that's where we still end up. However, the nights always end up not-so-casual by the time we get the check.
Where would you go in New-York City to celebrate the best news EVER!?
Dan and Mark: On nights we're celebrating, we always go to one of our favorite Williamsburg restaurants (Lilia or Greenpoint Fish and Lobster Co.) before ending with cocktails and a view at the Wythe Hotel rooftop (also known as The Ides).
It’s a Saturday night and the mood is right - where do you go in New-York City to party?
Dan and Mark: Brooklyn Bowl is always a great place to go have fun and dance. They have great live bands, great beers on tap, and, as you imagined, bowling! It's this weird/awesome mix of high-end bowling alley, rock concert venue, and club.
It’s your last day in New-York City - how do you spend your time?
Dan: I would want to go to the Statue of Liberty (I've still never been!) before hitting up my absolute favorite bakeries, bars and restaurants. I'd also like to take our dog for one last big walk around McCarren Park. Mark: Hitting up a mix of my "best of" list and some "bucket list" is in the cards. Top of mind would be a dinner at the NoMad, a concert at Terminal 5 and a late night (or early morning) elevator ride to the top of the Empire State Building.
What’s the one place a first-time visitor in New-York City can’t miss?
Dan and Mark: The Empire State Building- But make sure you go late at night. There's no line and the view of the city at night is much better than the one during the day.
