a bit about Cody
What do you do and why do you do it?
I am a Project Coordinator at lululemon. lululemon is now an international brand but it started in Vancouver only a few blocks from the beach! If you need spreadsheets, timelines, organization, and colour coding - I'm your girl.
Were you born and raised in Vancouver? If not, where did you grow up and what brought you to Vancouver?
I was born and raised in North Vancouver, left the province to attend university, and then returned as quickly as possible because there is no place like home! Whenever we drive over the Lions Gate Bridge that connects North Vancouver to Downtown, my Mom has always encouraged my family to exclaim "WE LIVE IN THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY IN THE WORLD!" and I have to say I agree with her! Vancouver is an amazing location where the mountains meet the sea - in the spring you can go skiing in the morning on Grouse Mountain and then sailing on the Pacific Ocean in the afternoon!
What’s your current hood in Vancouver and what’s the best/worst thing about it?
I live in the Vancouver West End. This gorgeous area is only a few blocks out of the main streets of Downtown but it's a quiet, community neighborhood full of local businesses and 2-3 story townhouses or apartments. I love the location for many reasons but here are my top three: 1) I don't need a car because I can walk or take public transit everywhere - it's close to everything; 2) It's surrounded by 3 main streets (Robson, Denman, and Davie) that are packed with restaurants, shops, and entertainment; and 3) it's only a few blocks from English Bay Beach or Stanley Park.
Name some spots in Vancouver that are good for a Tinder date.
I have a few go-to places for a first date but here are a few suggestions: 1) The Score on Davie 2) The Alibi Room in Gastown 3) Local Public Eatery ("the local") in Kitsilano.
Where do you buy those fabulous clothes of yours?
lululemon babe! I mean... I work there... I gotta rep the brand! It's a huge plus that I love the current athleisure trend. Everything else cool that I own was gifted to me or picked out for me by my very trendy sister.
What’s the area/ spot in town you’ll never be caught dead in?
East Hastings Street at night due to homelessness, drugs, gang violence, etc. It's just not safe down there - for anyone! I advise you to stay away.
What’s the thing you LOVE to do in your city that you never get to do?
Any chance I get I LOVE to bike around the Stanley Park Seawall. It's an amazingly beautiful experience.
Where do you go in Vancouver for a casual night out?
I love relaxing with friends or family at Cactus Club (either in English Bay or Coal Harbour) because the views are so spectacular and the food is consistently good.
Where would you go in Vancouver to celebrate some freaking good news?
I would head straight for Gastown! Dinner at Wildebeest (it's expensive but so worth it #treatyoself) or Gringo (cheap and fun tacos); barhopping at Alibi Room and L'Abattoir; and then end up at the Met to dance my a** off!
What’s your choice of transportation in Vancouver and why?
Walking, biking or busing. (I am trying to make a promise to myself to walk anytime it's not raining!) Everything downtown is so close!
What are the Vancouver spots a first-time visitor can’t miss?
Top 5 Vancouver spots for first time visitors: 1) Stanley Park Seawall, 2) Granville Island, 3) English Bay or Kitsilano Beach, 4) Gastown, 5) Hiking in North Vancouver
What are the Vancouver spots tourists should run from screaming?
Top 3 not to see: 1) Grouse Mountain Suspension Bridge is so expensive - go to the one in Lynn Valley for FREE, 2) FlyOver Canada, 3) Tour buses or horse drawn carriages - get on a bike! It's way more fun and you will see more!
What’s your favorite vacation city in the world and why?
Rome, Italy - I have been 4 times. FOUR!! It has so much history and culture. I always learn so much while I am there. BUT they also have amazing coffee, gelato, and pizza - my 3 favourite foods! I could vacation there all the time!
