It is a mistery not only to me- but there are very few places in Saint Petersburg where you can actually lay on the grass and enjoy the sunny warm days. Mostly its "keep off the grass" parks and gardens. That's why The Field of Mars is a great place to have a picnic or just chill after a long summer day. There are children running with kites, girls taking pictures and friends chatting while lying on the grass. By the way, the name doesn't have anything to do with the planet, it's a dedication to tyhe God of War, because in 18 and 19 century it used to be a military marching ground.
