This neighborhood is well-known for being a bohemian stronghold of the city of São Paulo, since the early 70's, when students with little money moved there, because of the proximity to the University of São Paulo and the Pontifical University Catholic University of São Paulo. There is a great concentration of bars and nightclubs, as well as the samba school Pérola Negra. The name of the neighborhood also served as the title of a novel by Rede Globo in the 1990s. Because of its reputation as a young and bohemian neighborhood and because it is close to the subway, several hostels have settled in the region.
