These hole in the wall restaurants have surprisingly good food
As we all know, looks can be deceiving. When you’re traveling, it’s easy to miss out on amazing places cause they look, well, crappy. Good thing we have our local cousins to point out the diamonds in the rough.
There’s plenty of humble Chinese spots in Chinatown which do amazing food. Nom Wah Tea Parlor and Vanessa’s Dumpling House are my favorite. So cheap as well!
La Pizzeria Italiana in Catford. It’s set in a brutalist building that looks just awful, something out of George Orwell’s 1984, the kind of building that you wish had never been built. But once you’re in, the food is unbelievable. Franco (the owner) has solid specials (squid ink tagliatelle, or the fish stew mmm). That will be the most delicious Italian food you’ve tasted. Better than anything you’ve had in Italy!
Tintin, a Chinese restaurant in Belleville, on my opinion, the best place to have Chinese food in Paris. 17 Rue Louis Bonnet, 75011 Paris.
Inside the markets…. those are the best places, I have a secret one, it does not look like a crap place, but is inside a Market, the place is called Café Passmar…. the best coffee and chilaquiles.
Thai restos in Golden Mile Complex, where I usually eat before watching a film at The Projector.
Generally, old restaurants serving Korean dishes generally look quite old from its exterior. But if you are challengeable enough to visit the backstreet alleys of Dongdaemun or Namdaemun markets, you may find deep and authentic Korean pub restaurants. Sorry, I cannot name a few!
Little Ting’s Dumplings: Nothing fancy and it’s easy to miss, plus the hours are rough. But these handmade dumplings are as authentic as they come.
Athens is literally full of family-run tavernas which often haven’t been renovated for many decades. I personally have never been disappointed visiting 5Ф at Ilisia and Γεύομαι και Μαγεύομαι at Thissio.
Brandy Ho’s. It is just gross and not that clean but an SF staple for Chinese food! I literally could get takeout from there forever!
YAGNE kiosk on yaffo 19, nobody knows it (NOBODY). They make the best toasts from jerusalem style salty bagel, rice&beans and breakfast. The cheapest place ever.
