5 Cities, 10 Fabulously Hidden Bars

Yeah, having a drink with some friends at a cool pub is nice and all, but some nights we’re looking for something else. And what’s nicer than some mystery with a touch of exclusivity? If you’re looking for a unique experience, our cousins care to share some of the most secretive places in their city. Who said secrets were meant to be kept?

This place is a new one. But to access it, you’ll have to pass the door of a laundromat. Yes you heard me, a real laundromat. No need to wash your clothes though, no worries! You’ll have to find the door behind one of the laundry machine and here you go! The place is a bit small but the cocktails are amazing and the interior design is just perfect (special mention for the stools and the swings)

A hidden bunker in the middle of the central Vondelpark. Often are parties and screenings hosted - check their website. With a twinge of activist - it sure is a hidden gem.

Don't be swayed by the sign- it's not a public toilet. Down the stairs of these disused Victorian lavatories is a speak-easy cocktail bar. The place is compact to say the least and you may have to wait a bit on a Saturday night- but the cocktails are worth it (as well as the bartenders banter). They have 12 bespoke spirits including Kentish Town's own Highwayman Gin. The music is jazz based and sometimes they have some live music action as well. My favourite drink here is the Pear Collins.

I must admit that I almost gave up trying to find 5CC. The bar is hidden beneath the hustle and bustle of the Well and Bucket (admittedly a great pub in its own right), accessible only by a small staircase to the right of the bar. Candlelit, 5CC feels like a members club, situated in a network of tunnels and coves.

This club is located in an apartment. You simply enter to the courtyard of an old building at the address and go up to the second floor. It used to be really a private and secret place but became a popular bar. The ceiling is painted as a sky and you can enjoy good selection of gins and absinths in there. There are parties with live music and DJs and other art events on a theatre-like stage.

This is a normal restaurant...no, if you call up and book and mention that "you'd like a room by the hour" they'll say fine, come down at a certain time. You turn up, the staff almost whisper, go downstairs to the bathroom and pick up the red phone...you do, and on the other end of the line is silence...you repeat the phrase "room by the", you're cut off and told: "push the mirror behind you"...you walk through the wall and into your very own private room. On the walls, there are three buttons: one for the ligths, one for the vintage 16mm Russ Meyer-esque movies & one for cocktails, which are sent through a hatch.

Right next door to the Clapham Common underground entrance, lies a converted water closet (that's English for public toilets.) This wine bar and charcuterie is definitely a unique concept waiting to be experienced. Upon walking in, WC’s warmth and intimacy is enchanting, making you feel like you have just found the best-kept secret in London. The diverse but unpretentious wine list, coupled with some the tastiest cheese and cured meats is enough to make you want to stay all evening. WC also host live music, which only adds to the charm and mystique of this little bar South of the river.
